What about my husband in this unexpected journey?

What about my husband?
For him, this must first have brought back memories from more than fifty years ago when his first wife got breast cancer.   She left him with two daughters to finish raising, though both were almost out on their own...one in college, and the other just graduating from high school.  Now, it looks like this cancer thing is trying to steal away his second wife.

How does he take this unexpected journey?  He didn't ask for it,  but praise God, in our committed marriage, he is with me all the way!  Today's blog is about him   Being he is 90, he has turned a lot of things over to his "young" wife.  He depends on me in paying the bills, getting his meals, and being there for him when he feels weak--like his wooziness after being seated for some time.  He grabs onto my arm at those times.

From my point of view, God has blessed me soooooooooo greatly with a man who has GREAT faith!   He knows God is in control of this situation.   Together we pray about it.  Together we talk about the future.  We aren't afraid of the future because we know Who holds the future.  We know God can do ALL things, and together we seek in knowing Him and His ways better.

Every evening, after our devotions together, when we retire, he gently gives me a wonderful backrub.  It relaxes me, and I know that most of the time, he's praying quietly for me as he does this.  I fall asleep quickly in the knowledge of both my husband's love and the Lord's love.

In the mornings, sometimes I run off to exercise or to one of my morning Bible studies with dishes still in the sink.   When I come back, they somehow got clean, and the kitchen area cleaned up.  I don't think he had any company when I was gone...at least I hope not, with my leaving the house in such a mess!.

I think of the song that was sung at our wedding,

"Together with Jesus, life's pathway we tread,
As one heart united, by His Hand are led...
His love e'er surrounds us, His comfort and cheer
Will ever sustain us though days may be drear.

Together with Him, O love so divine
Together with Him, O rapture sublime
Together with Him, Life's pathway we tread."
(there's so much more to this song, but I can't find it  or to give the credits either)

In thinking this over, if God would have healed his first wife, I would have missed out on this wonderful journey of being married to Earl...of being the mother of our wonderful children,  and having a life of ministry together.  Who knows what the future has for either of us?   God knows, and that's enough for us.

I'll close with the two wonderful verses from Romans 8...verses 28 and 29 and maybe more!

Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Rom 8:29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Rom 8:30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

Rom 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Rom 8:32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

  1. I appreciated this post. I have also thought about Dad's past in the process of all of this. I also love how you left this open ended. Only God knows how this story will end. Anyway, it brought a tear to my eye as I thought of all the ways Dad is so loving to you. Makes me thankful for my Shawn, as I see a lot of that in him too. SO thankful to have you both. By no means is this too personal. It's a beautiful love story that deserves to be shared. Thank you again for sharing your heart. I love you so much Mom. Your amazing. :)
